You probably saw these when you were a child, the "connect-the-dots" pictures in the coloring books. You would draw a line from one dot to another, and either a portion of a drawing would be filled in or an entire picture would appear. Words are like those dots. In a paragraph, you follow the related terms to find the "picture" the writer wants presented to your mind.
Using Romans 10:15-17, connect the dots: connect the key words that reflect the same idea. We begin with Romans 10:15 (And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!). The first "dot" : preach the gospel of peace.
Romans 10:16 (But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias [Isaiah] saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?) The second and third "dots" : the gospel and Esaias' report.
Romans 10:17 (So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God). The fourth and fifth "dots": they are faith and the word of God.
Let us view the picture: (1.) preach the gospel of peace; which is (2.) the gospel, the same gospel of Isaiah's (3.) report. This is the (4.) faith which we preach and which we desire all men to receive. It is (5.) the word of God.
Peter told Cornelius and all in his house that day, "The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) that word, I say, ye know..." (Acts 10:36-37). Those Romans knew "the word" which God sent, preaching peace by Jesus Christ. Notice: God was doing the "preaching" (through Christ and now, by his Spirit, through us). And, God was preaching peace between God and man by the Lord Jesus Christ. That "word" was the gospel of peace, the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Have you heard it? Have you seen it, this "faith" which comes from hearing the word of God?
Moses and all of the prophets give witness to it. The purpose of the Old Testament is to bring us to Christ (Galatians 3:24). Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
